Über den Film | Mit seinem Spielfilmdebüt erforscht der Musiker, Filmemacher und Allroundkünstler Baloji auf eindringliche Weise, wie sehr der Glauben das Schicksal seiner vier Hauptfiguren beeinflusst. OMEN ist ein bildgewaltiger Film mit Elementen aus Surrealismus und magischem Realismus, ein umwerfender Beweis für die kreative Energie des aktuellen afrikanischen Kinos.

Der Dokumentarfilm The Tree of Authenticity (2025) des kongolesischen Filmemachers, Fotografen und Videokünstlers Sammy Baloji beleuchtet die Verbindung von Kolonialismus und Klimakrise – aus der Perspektive des Baumes der Authentizität. Ausgehend von den Überresten eines ehemaligen Forschungszentrums für tropische Landwirtschaft in Yangambi, Demokratische Republik Kongo, untersucht Baloji die Verbindungen zwischen kolonialer Ausbeutung, wissenschaftlicher Forschung und der heutigen Klimakrise.

Is contemporary literature—and storytelling in general—helping to address the accelerating climate and nature crisis, or adding fuel to the fire? Tens of thousands of articles in literary and cultural criticism have approached this question primarily through close readings of environmentally focused novels and films, but this methodology cannot provide a much-needed macro perspective. In this talk, I discuss the potential of narratives to shape our beliefs, attitudes and behaviors and describe the development of the Strategic Environmental Narratives codebook and the results of its application to 500 stories in the most prestigious literary magazine in the Anglosphere.
